Walks Through a Chair is a site-specific installation of an anamorphic chair. The chair exists only from one angle; a simple shift in perspective breaks the illusion. The work questions the fragility and legitimacy of a single point of view. The installation is accompanied by a video of Ngui, the artist, walking through the chair.
Ngui (b. 1962) belongs to a generation of Singaporean artists that pushed the boundaries of modern art through performance and installation. In the 1990s, he began using anamorphosis, or distorted projection, in his work to explore the theme of unreliable perspectives. Ngui was also the first Singaporean artist to be featured at the prestigious Documenta X event in Germany.
