This conversation between Gallery curator Qinyi Lim and artist Tan Chin Kuan explores artist’s Tragic of Blue Night (1991), its iconography and in a broader sense, the landscape surrounding Malaysian contemporary art in the late 1980s and early 90s—a time of growing trade and mobility of artists in the region. Referencing his Blue Night series that began in 1987, Tan will share how his practice was influenced by Metaphysical Art and Surrealism. The work is currently on display at the UOB Southeast Asia Gallery 14.
The conversation will be conducted in both English and Mandarin.
About the Artist
Tan Chin Kuan graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art from the Malaysian Institute of Art and has participated in exhibitions such as the 1993 Osaka Triennale, 1995 Gwangju Biennale and 1999 Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. Tan is also an art researcher and writer of Malaysian art history.
About the Moderator
Qinyi Lim is Curator at National Gallery Singapore. She holds a Masters in Southeast Asian Studies from the National University of Singapore and completed the de Appel Curatorial Programme in 2012. Lim has held curatorial positions in Para Site, Hong Kong; NUS Museum, Singapore and Singapore Art Museum.
