Step into the world of fanfiction as a space for desire, imagination, and self-expression.
Structured around the creation of a personal fanfiction zine, the workshop invites participants to move through guided discussions and writing activities directly on its pages.
Responding to Passion is Volcanic: Desire in Southeast Asian Art, selected artworks from the exhibition are playfully paired with beloved fanfiction tropes and tags (think slow burn, lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers, or hurt/comfort), opening up unexpected ways to read, feel, and reinterpret what we see.
This interactive conversation-led session creates a safe and welcoming space to explore agency, longing, and identity in the stories we love, and to talk about the prompts and tropes we don’t always say out loud.
As the session unfolds, each contribution becomes part of a growing narrative, culminating in a completed zine to take home.
If fanfiction allows readers and writers to take an existing story and ask “what if?”, what happens when we do the same with artworks? Come ready to see paintings through a storyteller’s lens, and to talk and write boldly (tags included!).

Bringing together 20 artworks centring on Southeast Asia, this exhibition examines how artists work with archives to address forgotten, lesser known, or difficult histories.
