Video Vanguard: Channelling Body, Society and Spirit in Southeast Asia by Dr Edwin Jurriens

Dr Edwin Jurriens

13 Oct 2023

In his keynote lecture, Dr Edwin Jurriens (Convenor & Associate Professor of Indonesian Studies at the Asia Institute, Faculty of Arts, The University of Melbourne) provides various concepts and contexts for the interpretation of the works in the See Me, See You exhibition. He argues that the artists and their works are part of a Southeast Asian creative vanguard of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Dr Jurriens proposes that this pioneering quality is reflected in their capacity to break with the notion of the autonomy of art, and reconnect with the praxis of life, presenting artistic innovation and imaginative visions for a better world. Moreover, the works set in motion dynamic processes of creation and reflection in which audiences play an active part. Rather than constituting static objects or technological tools, they can be seen as forms of corporeal, social and spiritual channelling.
