Notes

  • Nakahira tends to be overshadowed by the two giants, Araki and Moriyama, but he is undoubtedly one of the pioneers of postwar Japanese photography, standing shoulder to shoulder with them, and he continued to write not only with photographic works but also with radical "words and theories". His activities span nearly 50 years from the 1960s to the 2010s, and although his works have been introduced in fragments until now, this is probably the first retrospective that summarizes his entire career. In 2003, the Yokohama Museum of Art held "Return to the Origin - Yokohama", but this exhibition also covers his activities and works after that. The catalogue is 500 pages long, and his "works" such as magazines and photo books are introduced in chronological order.
  • Catalogue of an exhibition held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, from February 6 to April 7, 2024. Translators, Tomiyama Yukiko, Christopher Stephens, Daniel Abbe.
  • Includes bibliographical references (pages 472-479).
  • Text in English and Japanese.
