Summary
"Visions of the East: Asia through French Eyes explores the ways in which Asia have been portrayed and imagined throughout the history of French cinema. From the earliest film footage of Indochina and Japan by the Lumi.ư̐ere Brothers and orientalist epics of the 1910s, to groundbreaking films from the 1950s and 60s by Alain Resnais, Pierre Schoendoerffer and Louis Malle and contemporary French films about Asia, the film programme examines both the physical and imagined landscapes of the East as seen through the eyes of French filmmakers amidst the social and political changes taking place in France. Besides well-known French films about Asia such as La 317.ư̐eme section / Section 317, Indochine and L'amant / The Lover, the film programme also features rare documentaries about Singapore in the 1960s and 70s unearthed from the French National Audiovisual Institute. Other highlights include a roundtable discussion and newly commissioned music to be performed live for a selection of early French films and silent classics." -- unpaged at front of text.
