Self-Portrait
This self-portrait of Tchang Ju Chi presents a close-up view of the artist. The composition gives the impression that Tchang is caught in the act of painting himself, blurring the line between the artist as a creator and as a subject. Which aspects of himself was he trying to portray? His expression appears determined, with a steely look in his eyes. Tchang’s attire also speaks to his self-image. His white shirt with rolled-up sleeves, striped tie and visible suspenders, are tokens of an urbane, modern look. The paintbrush in his hand, poised as if ready to paint, is an affirmation of his identity as a painter. In this work, Tchang’s skill shines through the detailed and realistic rendering of his features and attire, revealing the many aspects of how he saw himself as an artist.
