Singtel contributes S$20 million to the National Gallery Singapore

Inaugural show at Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery to premiere in April 2016

Singtel will support the National Gallery Singapore in presenting internationally renowned artworks alongside significant Southeast Asian art with a S$20 million contribution to the Gallery.

In acknowledging the generous gift from Singtel, the special exhibition galleries located on the third floor of the Gallery will be named the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery. The space is dedicated to showcasing modern art that is co-curated with renowned museums from around the world.

Ms Chua Sock Koong, Singtel Group CEO said, "We are very excited to be collaborating with the National Gallery Singapore to present artworks that are rarely seen in Singapore and the region. At the same time, we feel proud to see art from home and Southeast Asia take their place alongside global offerings. We believe this will be instrumental in putting Southeast Asian art on the global map.

Spanning a total floor area of approximately 20,000 square feet, the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery comprises three areas including a double volume gallery.

National Gallery Singapore CEO Ms Chong Siak Ching said, "Singtel’s generosity helps support an important goal of the Gallery which is to further the understanding of art in Southeast Asia in a global context. In addition to introducing international artworks to Singapore, we will actively ignite international interest in Southeast Asian art by co-organising and co-curating a series of special exhibitions under a collaborative framework with our partners."

The Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery will present two international shows yearly with the inaugural show slated for April 2016. This will be co-curated by Dr Eugene Tan, Director of National Gallery, in partnership with one of the world’s most renowned art museums. Singtel's gift will enable the Gallery to undertake more of such collaborative exhibitions with other reputable regional and international art institutions.

Special Exhibitions are a critical component of the Gallery’s overall programming which include its permanent galleries which present the art histories of Singapore and Southeast Asia.
