140 × 35 cm
Gift of Paul Yao Swee Yuin
Collection of National Gallery Singapore
Inscription:
They move among the reeds, as the wind blows softly;
Their thick plumage keeps out the cold.
With chests held high, how could they yield to the grandeur of noble houses?
They have no need to court favour. What proud spirits!
The character “he” is missing after “ren.”
Painted as a guest in Singapore in the winter of the Jiachen year [1964]. Fan Chang Tien.
Seals:
Fan (intaglio), Chang Tien (intaglio), Beyond reality (intaglio)
EXL:
This section presents several works Fan Chang Tien made in 1964 that demonstrate a brief turn towards abstraction. In Untitled (Geese) (1964), the geese are densely clustered. Loose, broken lines derived from the baimiao (plain drawing) technique define the volume of their bodies. The surrounding reeds are rendered in light and dark washes with spontaneous brushwork. The overlapping forms of the geese and reeds create a patterned, abstracted composition that conveys the vitality of the scene.

EXL:
Tanpa Tajuk (Angsa)
1964
Dakwat Cina dan warna pada kertas
140 × 35 cm
Hadiah daripada Paul Yao Swee Yuin
Koleksi Galeri Nasional Singapura
EXL:

1964
Chinese ink and colour on paper
139 × 34 cm
Aurevia Art Collection, Singapore, founded by Audrey Koh and Huang Ban Chin
Inscription:
Fishermen with their families dwell by the sea;
Rising winds whip up the waves like angry thunder.
Sarong-clad folks live among coconut palms through the seasons.
Under tropical skies, a great snowfall would be a wondrous thing to hear of.
Painted as a guest in Singapore on a clear summer day in the fifth month of the Jiachen year [1964]. Fan Chang Tien.
Seals:
Fan (relief), Chang Tien (intaglio), Laugh at the pursuit of fame (relief)
EXL:
To date, these are the only known works by Fan Chang Tien depicting the local landscape. Their compositions follow the conventions of traditional Chinese mountain-and-water painting. Blue palm and coconut trees take the place of mountains. The figures occupy the lower portion of the paintings. They are not scholars or travellers wandering through mountain landscapes. Depicting a cyclist and a Malay woman, these works, together with the poetry, ground the scenes in the realities of local life.

Dakwat Cina dan warna di atas kertas
139 × 34 cm
Koleksi Seni Aurevia, Singapura, diasaskan oleh Audrey Koh dan Huang Ban Chin
EXL:

Inscription:
Gently brushed away by the tropical heat, the dew soon dries.
I roll up the blind and look at the view before me.
The tranquil foothills delight the heart as many birds gather;
Coconut palms grow freely in the expansive land.

Seals:
Fan Chang Tien (relief), Pictorial seal of bamboo (relief), Beyond reality (intaglio)
EXL:
This painting depicts a scene that Fan Chang Tien saw from the window of Su Lan Studio. The composition resembles his bamboo-and-rock paintings, but here a sturdy coconut palm takes the place of bamboo. Perched on a rock are three mynahs, birds commonly seen in Singapore. Using moist, expressive brushwork to render the coconut palm, the artist vividly conveys a distinctively tropical scene.
