Chen Chong Swee (1910–1985) was an important early artist and educator who contributed significantly to the development of the art scenes in Malaya and Singapore. He was amongst the first artists in Singapore to incorporate local subject matter in his paintings.

This exhibition features key works from Chen’s six decade-long career. It highlights his proficiency and experimentation with both Chinese and Western art mediums. Through his innovative and bold approach, Chen left behind a lasting legacy of bringing together different artistic inspirations to express his emotions and thoughts authentically.

Wu Guanzhong: A Walk through Nature and Rediscovering Treasures: Ink Art from the Xiu Hai Lou Collection are running at the Wu Guanzhong Gallery in tandem with this exhibition. Viewed collectively, these complementary shows offer a broad overview of the evolution of modern Chinese painting.
