Presenting new research and contemporary curatorial projects on Basoeki Abdullah and his ongoing relevance within the Indonesian contemporary art scene, this panel brings together curators Sally Texania and Gie Sanjaya in conversation. Representing a new generation of discourse on Basoeki Abdullah, Sally and Gie have worked with renowned Indonesian institutions who have played key roles in framing Basoeki Abdullah as a significant artist in Indonesian art history. Sally has contributed to curatorial and collection research for the Indonesian Presidential Palace, home to President Sukarno’s art collection; Sukarno himself was one of Basoeki’s most iconic patrons. Gie has collaborated closely with the Museum Basoeki Abdullah and the artist’s estate to develop projects that connect the artist with younger generations.
Through their work, Sally and Gie offer fresh perspectives on a complex artist—one who was at times criticized for producing “art of lust,” yet also celebrated as the portraitist of ASEAN leaders.
