Beginning with Robert Zhao’s commission, this conversation follows the tilapia as an ordinary yet layered presence in Southeast Asia – a fish that moves through waterways, markets, kitchens, and systems of value.
How does a familiar fish become overlooked in one place and prized in another? What do our eating preferences reveal about the environments, histories and cultures we inherit? And how might paying closer attention to a single species open up wider stories about how we live with the world around us?
Through art and food, this panel invites audiences to consider the hidden journeys behind the everyday – and how something as familiar as tilapia can surface lesser-known stories of place, movement, and culture.
