Gallery’s 10th Birthday Bash: National Gallery Singapore Celebrates a Decade of Art, People, and Possibilities

Singapore, 11 October 2025

The Gallery celebrates its role as a civic space and cultural hub with a weekend of festivities, creative collaborations, and digital-first experiences.

National Gallery Singapore Celebrates a Decade of Art, People, and Possibilities

SINGAPORE, 7 October 2025 – National Gallery Singapore, home to the world’s largest public collection of Singapore and Southeast Asian modern and contemporary art, officially turns 10 this year on 24 November 2025. Since opening in 2015, the Gallery has welcomed over 14 million visitors and established itself as one of Asia’s leading art institutions. More than a museum, it has become a vibrant civic space where people gather to encounter art, exchange ideas, and create shared memories.

Dr Eugene Tan, CEO and Director of National Gallery Singapore, says, “In just ten years, the Gallery has transformed from a bold idea into a cultural landmark that belongs to the people. Every visitor, artist, and community that has engaged with the Gallery has shaped its journey, proving that art is not only about what hangs on our walls but about the connections it sparks among people. Our 10th anniversary is both a celebration of these shared stories and a call to the future, to continue championing Singapore and Southeast Asian art with renewed ambition, placing our region more firmly on the global stage while remaining a space that belongs to everyone.”

Over the past decade, the Gallery has redefined how art is experienced in Singapore. It has presented groundbreaking exhibitions, from Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow (2017), which drew record-breaking crowds, to Tropical: Stories from Southeast Asia and Latin America (2023), which placed regional art in dialogue with global movements. It has also launched festivals that animate the Civic District, including the annual festival, Light to Night Singapore, and the biennial Gallery Children’s Biennale, engaging hundreds of thousands of visitors. At the same time, the Gallery has pioneered innovative programmes and digital platforms that make art more accessible to diverse audiences, strengthening Singapore’s cultural landscape while positioning Southeast Asian art firmly on the world stage.

A Weekend to Celebrate Together

National Gallery Singapore 10th Anniversary banner

To mark this milestone, National Gallery Singapore will host Gallery’s 10th Birthday Bash on 15 and 16 November 2025, transforming its spaces into a festival of art, music, food, performances, and shared experiences with extended hours from 10am to 10pm daily. The celebrations are designed for audiences of all ages, reflecting the spirit of creativity and connection that has defined the Gallery’s first decade.

Throughout the weekend, all the Gallery’s exhibitions – over ten in total – will be open to the public for free, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy the artworks and reflect on the Gallery as a space for inspiration and connection. Opening just in time for Gallery’s 10th Birthday Bash is Into the Modern: Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston – the largest exhibition of French Impressionism ever presented in Southeast Asia. Visitors will be among the first to encounter this landmark show and see many artworks debuting in Singapore.

In addition, a series of special programmes created exclusively for the weekend will offer once-in-a-decade experiences for visitors. Reflecting the Gallery’s role as a people’s museum, most programmes are free to attend, with registration required for selected activities due to limited capacity.

A key highlight is Artsplaining: 10th Anniversary Edition, a light-hearted, dialogue-driven tour featuring cultural personalities and local stars such as Gurmit Singh, Kishan, Liu Ling Ling, and Shazza. Paired with Gallery staff, they will share candid perspectives on art – blending entertainment with insight, breaking down barriers to art appreciation, and showing that art is truly for everyone. Also debuting is Sketch Chapter: 10th Anniversary Edition, an interdisciplinary sketching programme held at the Rotunda Library and Supreme Court Terrace. Presented in partnership with NAFA Centre for Lifelong Learning, the session blends facilitation and free sketching time to explore the Gallery’s heritage architecture as inspiration for creative expression.

Food also takes centre stage during the celebrations, kicking off the weekend with Gallery Turns 10: Celebrating with Cake, where local bakeries reimagine cake as edible art inspired by the Gallery’s architecture and collection, and share their bakes with visitors. Complementing this are nostalgic refreshments close to the hearts of Singaporeans, including familiar favourites like a MILO van, an Old Chang Kee Mobile Food Truck, as well as traditional treats such as tutu kueh and ice-cream served the classic way – inviting visitors to savour familiar flavours while creating new memories. The Gallery’s restaurants will also join in the celebrations with special promotions and dining deals throughout the weekend.

For those seeking something unexpected, the Gallery will host a Gallery Rave: Day Edition with Exposure Therapy, blending afrobeats, matcha, and dance culture in a one-day takeover of the Supreme Court Terrace. As night falls, the beloved Keppel Centre for Art Education (KCAE) transforms for KCAE After Dark, an adults-only playground with immersive installations, a live DJ, and creative play. For the first time in its history, the Centre opens after hours, offering a rare, one-off experience that reimagines the space in ways never seen before.

As part of a community photography initiative marking the Gallery’s 10th anniversary, members of the public have shared photos capturing their most meaningful moments at the Gallery, from favourite artworks and quiet corners to celebrations with family and friends. Selected entries will be presented in the Your Gallery Memory: Community Photography Showcase, a pop-up at the Supreme Court Terrace. Visitors can explore this collective tribute to the past decade and see how the Gallery has been a space for art, community, and connection. Visitors are also invited to co-create the Gallery Birthday Mixtape by contributing their favourite songs, which will be played across public spaces during the weekend celebrations.

Not forgetting our little ones, families can look forward to a series of themed art activities and hands-on workshops at the Keppel Centre for Art Education, from cake-inspired art making to animal face painting, all designed to spark imagination and fun for young visitors. The popular Messy Morning for the Little Ones returns with a cake theme for the Gallery’s 10th Birthday Bash, inviting children aged 3 to 5 to dive into creative, sensory play to mark the occasion.

Specially curated collaborations with well-loved local brands

To mark its 10th anniversary, the Gallery has brought together an unprecedented 13 brands in a landmark series of exclusive collaborations, the largest of its kind for any cultural institution in Singapore. From fashion and lifestyle to food and design, each collaboration reimagines the Gallery’s identity in a unique and collectible form, capturing the spirit of creativity and community that has defined its first decade.

Highlights include Mr. Bucket Chocolaterie’s bold reimagining of artworks into artisanal chocolate flavours, Curious Creatures’ jewellery inspired by the Gallery’s architectural motifs, Rocket Eyewear’s sunglasses in striking Gallery colourways, Orientalist Spirits’ limited-edition gin and whisky in homage to Raden Saleh’s iconic Boschbrand (Forest Fire), and The 1925 Brewing Co.’s tropical pineapple pale ale. These are joined by distinctive creations from ANS.EIN, Binary Style, Bynd Artisan, CLIZ, Leica, Sea Apple, Still Goods, and Supermama, a once-in-a-decade coming together of Singapore’s beloved creative brands.

These limited-edition products will be available from 8 October, with a retail showcase at the Gallery’s Spine Hall where visitors can explore the collections in person and purchase them easily via QR code links to partner websites. During the birthday bash, all 13 brands will come together for a one-of-a-kind Birthday Bash Market, transforming the museum into a vibrant hub of art, design, and creativity. Beyond the Gallery, the products will also be available at partners’ stores and online platforms. A portion of proceeds from sales will go towards supporting the Gallery and its programmes to make art more accessible to diverse audiences, ensuring the celebrations leave a lasting impact beyond the anniversary.

Digital experiences that bring art closer

To extend the celebrations beyond its walls, the Gallery is also rolling out a suite of digital-first initiatives designed to make art discovery more personal, playful, and accessible. At the heart of these is a dedicated 10th anniversary microsite, serving as the hub for community stories, brand collaborations, and a timeline of milestones that have shaped the Gallery’s first decade.

Visitors can take part in a personality quiz that pairs them with an artwork best matching their habits and ways of thinking, offering a uniquely tailored connection to the Gallery’s collection. On TikTok (@nationalgallerysingapore), a new gamified filter inspired by Raden Saleh’s Boschbrand (Forest Fire) challenges users to guide a tiger through a burning jungle using only their voice. With its sound-controlled gameplay and immersive 2D tiger mask, the filter opens up a fresh and creative way to experience art while extending the Gallery’s reach into digital communities.

Annex B: Gallery’s 10th Anniversary Brand Collaborations

BrandCompany ProfileProduct Write UpProduct Image / Retail Price (SGD)
ANS.EINANS.EIN is a fashion brand born in Singapore, where art meets style with a purpose. Founded by designer Anseina Eliza and Erlyn Karmelia, the label celebrates individuality, creativity, and sustainability. Each piece is more than clothing, it is a canvas that blends timeless elegance with contemporary expression. Known for transforming artworks into wearable fashion, ANS.EIN collaborates with artists to give their creations new life on fabrics, sharing stories that connect people to culture and community. Sustainability lies at the heart of the brand, with collections that incorporate eco-friendly practices, upcycled materials, and handcrafted details like batik, tenun, and origami-inspired designs. Beyond fashion, ANS.EIN carries a social mission, directing part of its proceeds to artists and charitable causes. With its blend of artistry, innovation, and heart, ANS.EIN redefines fashion as a platform for storytelling, empowerment, and positive change.

For the 10th Anniversary of National Gallery Singapore, ANS.EIN drew inspiration from the very heart of the museum: its iconic filigreed roof that bridges the two historic buildings.

The collection reimagines that experience through fashion. Using precision laser-cut techniques, each piece captures the intricate patterns of the roof, echoing its geometry while evoking the same sense of wonder it inspires. The delicate cutwork brings both lightness and texture to the garments, allowing them to move fluidly and play with illumination, just as the roof does. More than clothing, these designs are wearable reflections of this profound moment.

CLiZCLiZ is a Singaporean design house dedicated to transforming everyday essentials through the infusion of art into their form. Rooted in Bauhaus tradition and refined by modern engineering, CLiZ creates objects at the intersection of aesthetics and function.

At the heart of the brand is its iconic sculptural, vacuum-insulated bottle—more than a product, it is a dialogue of sight and touch. With breakthrough curves and meticulous craftsmanship, it reimagines the emotional connection between people and objects, turning the everyday into a sensorial experience.

Its design philosophy draws on a sacred triad: form, line, and colour; curves echo the flow of nature, lines balance and clarify, and colour awakens emotion. Founded by Christopher Low, CLiZ unites precision-led career rigor with a renewed devotion to art, shaping a design language that invites the world to discover beauty in the everyday.

Self Portrait by Georgette Chen

A bold tribute to one of Singapore’s most iconic modern artists, this limited drop reimagines “Self Portrait” by Georgette Chen through the vibrant lens of pop art.

The composition pays homage to Chen’s unwavering gaze and quiet strength, originally painted in post-war China, now reinterpreted with vivid colour blocks, halftone textures, and playful contrasts. The result is a striking fusion of tradition and modernity, echoing Chen’s legacy of forging new paths between East and West.

Inspired by the Gallery’s neoclassical dome, the design translates architecture into a cheerful play of colour and geometry. Arcs of light and prismatic forms turn stone into spectrum, reflecting the vibrancy of Singapore’s evolving identity.

Curious CreaturesCurious Creatures is a Singapore-based jewellery label that celebrates individuality through understated elegance. Known for its minimalist and modern designs, the brand offers demi-fine and fine jewellery crafted in precious metals and natural gemstones. With a focus on wearability and timelessness, Curious Creatures empowers self-expression through thoughtfully designed pieces that accompany you through everyday moments and milestones.

Inspired by the ethereal canopy that graces the entrance of National Gallery Singapore, this collection translates architectural brilliance into wearable artistry. Drawing from the concave gold filigreed roof — an interplay of metal and glass that bathes the Gallery floor in dappled light — we reimagine its intricate geometry through finely crafted metalwork.

The collection celebrates the tension between shadow and shimmer. Echoing the roof’s delicate perforations, each piece channels the softness of filtered light and the strength of structural design. Woven forms reminiscent of rattan and cane, referenced by architect Jean-François Milou, become guiding motifs.

Just as light becomes the soul of the canopy, it threads its way through the jewellery, illuminating airy silhouettes that are both grounded and graceful. A tribute to light as architecture, light as texture — and light as adornment.

National Gallery Singapore Architecture Plate

Drawing from the rich heritage of National Gallery Singapore, this signature porcelain piece unites three iconic architectural features into one harmonious and enduring motif.

The rotunda dome, with its elegant windows and pillars, forms the heart of the pattern, radiating outward like a symbol of openness and light. Surrounding this are motifs inspired by the historic City Hall Chamber, a space that once witnessed pivotal moments in Singapore’s history. Completing the design are intricate geometric patterns drawn from the Courtroom, reflecting the spirit of justice and dialogue.

Rendered in classic blue and white, the plate is both a functional tableware piece and a collectible keepsake — a celebration of heritage, architecture, and craft brought to life through contemporary porcelain design.

Gibbons by Chen Wen Hsi Porcelain Plate

Known for his mastery of both traditional Chinese ink techniques and modernist expression, Chen’s depictions of gibbons are among his most celebrated subjects, symbolising grace, vitality, and harmony with nature.

In timeless blue and white, this plate brings Chen’s expressive brushwork to life on delicate porcelain, honouring his artistic legacy while sharing his work with a wider audience. Both functional and collectible, it stands as a meaningful tribute to Singapore’s rich artistic heritage and the enduring influence of Chen Wen Hsi.

Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century

Into the Modern exhibition poster

Starting in the mid-1800s, this exhibition takes you on a journey through Southeast Asian art, showing how local artists continually embraced new ideas and styles. They redefined what art could be while keeping the essence of their cultural traditions alive.

As you explore the exhibit, you’ll follow a timeline that highlights major shifts in artistic expression, revealing how closely art is tied to the region's rich and ever-changing social and political history.

The curatorial narrative explores four main themes in a broadly chronological sequence, each one examining the shared artistic impulse of the region for each period: Authority and Anxiety, Imagining Country and Self, Manifesting the Nation, and Re:Defining Art.

Diplomacy and Desire: Basoeki Abdullah in Singapore

Into the Modern exhibition poster

Diplomacy and Desire is an exhibition about Basoeki Abdullah (1915-1993) and the beautiful women and powerful people he sought to represent through his artworks. The exhibition considers the relationship between Basoeki Abdullah’s mobilization of his artworks as ‘diplomatic’ gifts and his fame as a ‘master’ society painter - a painter of ‘beautiful women’. It is fascinating to consider the dialectic between his work as a 'commercial' painter and his agency as a regional cultural producer, who not only actively sought out his subjects but was also acutely aware of the geopolitical significance of his artworks' circulation.

Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission - Temple by Tuan Andrew Nguyen

Into the Modern exhibition posterRendering of the artwork

Reflecting on the idea of reincarnation, Tuan Andrew Nyugen’s Temple is a continuation of a research project that began in 2020 that investigated the effects and the surplus of UXO in Vietnam’s central region.

The large sculpture, almost architectural in size and form, will not only house large “bomb bells” that are defused M117 bombshells dropped by American B52’s, but an ensemble of round plate bells cast from defused UXO. A kinetic mechanism resembling mobiles will harness wind force to activate the bells, creating sounds without human intervention, creating a meditative space.

Lengths of beaded link-chain create an immense layered veil. The double layer of chains will result in a kind of optical interference or moiré effect. Depending on the viewer’s position, the density of the veil changes - from visually porous to denser and less permeable.
