Alina Ramirez - Roots (Jan – Mar 2024)

For her residency, pianist and composer Alina Ramirez presented Roots, a multi-programme response to Tropical: Stories of Southeast Asia and Latin America. Through a series of performances and workshops, Ramirez and her collaborators brought audiences on a euphonic journey across Southeast Asia and Latin America, exploring the common musical histories, cultures and sounds of these two tropical regions, set against the backdrop of the people’s struggle against colonialism.

About the artist

Alina Ramirez is a pianist, composer, educator and cultural promoter who has been performing for more than 35 years.

As a composer, she is influenced by both the Latin music tradition and contemporary styles. In 2013, Ramirez was awarded the highest recognition given by the Mexican Government, the Ohtli Medal, for her contributions to disseminating Mexican Culture and the Arts worldwide. In 2019, she founded the Singapore Latin American Arts and Cultural Centre with the aim of fostering cross-cultural exchange.
