Resonates With Residency

This residency programme invites local performing artists to respond to works and themes from the Gallery’s long-term and special exhibitions.

Current artists in residence

Resonates With Residency showcases three artists, each commissioned to create a series of multi-disciplinary performances in response to the Gallery’s permanent exhibition, Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century.

Over the course of their residency, each artist will present two work-in-progress showcases, culminating in a final performance at Light to Night Singapore 2025.

An Archipelagic Aeon I

An Archipelagic Aeon I is a performance poem that blends spoken word, ambient sound, and fragments of poetry and philosophy. It conjures up an imaginary Southeast Asia filled with shifting crowds, mythical stories, and ritual echoes, inviting audiences on a dreamlike sonic journey.

Inspired by Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century, the work explores themes like rame rame (festive crowd energy), local myths, and images that hold many overlapping stories.

These are reimagined through sound and language, creating a layered performance where past and present collide — a space where ancient voices speak through contemporary forms.

She Isn’t Here

She Isn’t Here is a choreographic exploration of the often unseen and unspoken labours that shape women’s bodies and behaviours in Southeast Asia. The work takes inspiration from Age of Full Bloom (1979), a painting by San Minn that was once censored in Myanmar. In it, a woman’s face is replaced by a bouquet of roses — an image that reflects how beauty can act both as decoration and as a mask. This tension echoes regional histories where women’s bodies are celebrated yet also controlled and silenced.

This first work-in-progress showing draws from the Chbab Srey, a traditional Cambodian code of conduct for women. Movements such as folding, grooming, bowing, and waiting — gestures of modesty and care — are reimagined as forms of labour: repetitive, restrained, and often invisible. When repeated to the point of exhaustion, these gestures begin to show the strain beneath the surface, with breath becoming a sign of effort, endurance, and resistance.

By treating the body as a kind of living archive, She Isn’t Here uncovers the quiet acts of self-discipline and erasure that shape collective memory — and opens a conversation about how power, beauty, and silence continue to influence how women are seen (or not seen) today.
