Solitude
Chua Tiag Ming
Solitude, c.1960–1970.

Photograph, 22.5 x 29.9 cm. Collection of National Gallery Singapore

In Solitude, photographer Chua Tiag Ming captures a moment of serenity. In the negative space of a vast sky and borderless waters, a couple gaze out to sea framed by the skeleton of an uprooted tree and scant outline of a shack.

Chua was a self-taught photographer who was active in the Photographic Society of Singapore in the 1960s and 1970s. His photographs often centre on individuals amidst a wider backdrop. Here, Chua relishes the couple’s togetherness in solitude.

Whether at home alone or with your family, we hope you find some respite during these challenging times and maybe even enjoy the solitude.
