OUT OF SIGHT is a participatory, interactive, social sculpture that invites audiences of all ages to see, play, think and be inspired. Created by Lawrence Weiner, one of the world's top living artists, it takes the form of a giant hopscotch court populated with fun and provocative phrases. Weiner specifically created this artwork with the outlook of young people in mind: the stances they take, and the steps they must take as they launch into life.

New York-based Weiner has been at the forefront of conceptual art since the 1960s. His practice incorporates subtle and imaginative use of text, exceptional, minimalist graphic design, reflecting his sophisticated take on the artist's position with respect to the object, the viewer, and the experience of their work.

On display in Singapore for a limited time, come down to the Civic District to discover this unique floor sculpture, alongside the many other things to see and do at National Gallery Singapore and The Arts House.

About the artist

Lawrence Weiner attended the New York public school system. After graduating, he spent the late 1950s and early 1960s traveling throughout North America (USA - Mexico and Canada). The first presentation of this work was in Mill Valley California in 1960.

Weiner divides his time between his studio in New York City and his boat in Amsterdam. He participates in public and private projects and exhibitions in the new and the old world and maintains that “Art is the empirical fact of the relationships of objects to objects in relation to human beings and not dependent upon historical precedent for either use or legitimacy.”

“A person coming in with whatever situation they find themselves in, the minute they have any thoughts about themselves going FROM HERE TO THERE, they will be able to stand in front of the marelle and realize they first have to imagine themselves doing it, that’s assuming a position.”
– Lawrence Weiner
