Trishaw Rider - Introduction
Trishaw Rider is an oil on canvas painting by Malaysian-born, Singapore-based female artist Lai Foong Moi. Painted in 1961, it is now part of National Gallery Singapore’s collection.
This painting portrays a trishaw rider playing a nose flute during a rare moment of rest. The trishaw and the rider are slightly angled towards us, facing our right side. The rider is a picture of ease, leaning back into the passenger seat, with his bare feet resting on a horizontal metal foot bar in front of the seat.
The passenger seat of the trishaw occupies about three-quarters of the painting. The trishaw’s hood is folded back, with an open umbrella on the left providing the rider with shade. The front wheel of the bicycle is shown at the bottom left corner.
