Raden Salah. Boschbrand (Forest Fire). 1849. Oil on canvas, 300 x 396 cm. Collection of National Gallery Singapore. This work has been adopted by Yong Hon Kong Foundation.
Uncover the stories of Singapore’s Civic District, where power once resided in stone and marble, and continues to shape our shared identity today. Led by the Best Friends of the Gallery—deeply knowledgeable volunteer guides who know all about the history and architecture of Singapore’s preserved sites and monuments—this tour invites you to see familiar landmarks in a new light. Discover why these grand colonial buildings stand where they do, how their architecture reflects changing values, and how key moments in Singapore’s history—along with the artworks housed within the Gallery—reveal how spaces of authority have been transformed into spaces for the people.
